Printer printing blank pages

A document is submitted to the printer, but the printed pages come out blank. There are several possible causes for this issue.

Possible causes:

  1. Unsupported or incorrectly rendered PDF features

  2. Corrupted PDF structure
  3. Transparency flattening issue
  4. Layers (Optional Content Groups)
  5. Fonts not embedded
  6. Printer running out of rendering memory

Please be advised that, in this situation, we recommend contacting the library staff to request that the document be resent with extended compatibility or to inquire about a refund.


1. Unsupported or incorrectly rendered PDF features
PDF files can contain:

    • Optional Content Groups (layers)
    • Transparency
    • Soft masks
    • Blend modes
    • Embedded fonts
    • XObjects
    • Complex clipping paths

Some printer PDF interpreters simply fail to render these objects and produce blank pages instead of generating an error. This is especially common on:

    • Older firmware
    • Embedded PDF interpreters
    • Low memory devices

2. Corrupted PDF structure

The PDF may contain:

    • Damaged cross-reference tables
    • Broken object references
    • Malformed streams
    • Invalid compression

Adobe Reader is extremely tolerant of malformed PDFs, but printer firmware often is not.

3. Transparency flattening issue
This issue can occur when every object sits inside a transparency group and the printer cannot flatten it correctly. In such cases, the renderer may output completely blank pages.

4. Layers (Optional Content Groups)
The visible content may reside inside Optional Content Groups (OCGs).
The printer's PDF interpreter may ignore OCGs or render them as hidden.

5. Fonts not embedded

If every visible object relies on fonts that are missing, subset incorrectly, or corrupted some printers simply render nothing.


6. Printer running out of rendering memory
Embedded PDF interpreters need RAM to process the data.
Here are a few symptoms that indicate the issue is related to a lack of RAM:

    • All pages feed normally
    • No error
    • Blank pages
    • Sometimes only large pages fail
